Charlotte's Weekly Round-Up

With the RA still buzzing from last week’s Contemporary Circle Cocktail and London buzzing before Frieze next week; I am taking the opportunity to fill you in on news and exhibitions in and around the fair.

VICTORIA MIRO GALLERY

Not content with exhibiting just one artist for Frieze, Victoria Miro Gallery is exhibiting three of its finest. The exhibition opens tonight and carries on until November 13th. Her space alone is worth seeing.

FRIEZE ARTISTS’ PROJECTS

Frieze isn’t just about sales; the fair also has a commissioning angle where they invite artists to respond to the fair itself. This year Matthew Darbyshire has redesigned the ticket office, the press release describes it as: “Fully functional as a box office, it will also include a number of the functionless devices often used by the creators of such concept stores and the subversion of what we consider classic store design concepts. The project examines how an audience with varying levels of familiarity with commercial design, reacts to the displaced design conventions employed within the structure.” Go and judge for yourself…

VENICE AND THE ESCALATOR OF SIGHS?

Controversial plans are afoot to turn the 16th-century Fondaco dei Tedeschi into a shopping centre. Rem Koolhaas has been commissioned by the building’s owner Benetton to refurbish the building that is next to the Rialto on the Grand Canal (proposed interior design above). The Art Newspaper reveals more here: http://www.theartnewspaper.com/articles/City+of+Bridges+to+get+its+first+escalators/21568

TOBY ZIEGLER AT THE ZABLUDOWICZ COLLECTION

This Saturday sees the opening of a new commission by artist Toby Ziegler at collector Anita Zabluodowicz’s space 176. Pop along at 6pm to take part in the curator led tour.
