I’m very happy to be back and hope you’re all enjoying the weather and/or the football. Whilst the auction houses ring up new records for Manet and Matisse the contemporary art world is still coming down from Art Basel. There were mixed reviews on the commissions and projects but spirits seem to have been high with regards to sales. Back at the Royal Academy we’re enjoying the Summer Exhibition (on until 22nd August) and Tracey Emin’s “Walking with Tears” in the Friends Room.
CURATORIAL PRACTICE
David Barrie, former director of The Art Fund, writes an interesting piece in the Art Newspaper. He welcomes the Tate’s recent acquisition of new works from the Middle East and Africa but it’s also a call to arms – a challenge to collections of contemporary art to up their game. Read more here:

SOUTH LONDON GALLERY RE-OPENS
After three years of renovation SLG shows off its new spaces this Thursday with the exhibition “Nothing is Forever” a group show of artists who have shown in the space before or been associated in someway with the gallery

It’s run by the former chef at the Hope and Anchor gastro-pub and designed by Paloma Gormley.

VENETIA DEARDEN AT EDEL ASSANTI
Young gallery Edel Assanti has taken over a disused building near Victoria Station to showcase works by emerging and established artists with an emphasis on young photographers. Dearden’s work documents revelers at Glastonbury in a strange combination of styles that appears as a cross between Boo Ritson and Richard Avedon.
